Purchasing a Microcomputer
Using the criteria below, and resources such as: the World Wide Web, New York Times computer and technology section, computer magazines, and catalogs; choose two similar computers that are most appropriate for your needs and determine what type of microcomputer and software you would purchase. Your budget is $800.
Think about what tasks you want to accomplish with your computer. (e.g. type term papers, do on-line research, desktop publishing, manage a small business, play games, keep personal financial records etc.)
What software do you think you need to accomplish the purposes you have outlined? Which specific applications will you buy and why? Computer magazines often review classes of software to help you decide. Other sources may be recommendations of colleagues, testing software at college, or industry standards. Discuss whether it is important for you to have identical or compatible software for home and school/work.
What hardware platform will run the software you have identified in the previous question? Most general purpose software today comes in MAC and Windows versions, however, this may not be true of proprietary software designed for a specific industry. How much RAM do you need to run the software you have selected in the above question? What size hard disk will you need? Will you need any peripheral hardware such as a modem, printer, scanner, or fax machine? Even if you cannot purchase the peripherals under the current budget constraints, describe what additional upgrades you may want in the future and what each will entail.
Your paper should contain four double spaced typed pages addressing the criteria questions outlined above. Please attach saved web pages or scanned images of articles and/or advertisements for all purchases and a final purchase worksheet listing each item or package of hardware and software you have selected including the total cost. Two copies must be submitted. A soft copy without advertisements or comparison spreadsheet should be posted to BlackBoard for “Safeassign” and a hard copy with ads and everything else should be handed in by the day of the final at the latest.
