IMPACT OF DICTATORSHIP OF DUVALIER AND JEAN-CLAUDE TO HAITI

Haiti is the first black republic that attained its independence in 1804 from the French colonizers. The country is however ranked among the poorest countries across the world alongside Somalia and Afghanistan. Haiti has experienced a series of political instability issues that have resulted into turmoil due to dictatorship. The leaders who have assumed power since independence have provided weak leadership that which has been characterized by abuse of authority, misappropriation of funds, conflicts and misery. During the reign of President Francois Duvalier, the country was relieved to have elected an intellectual who would bring economic growth, political stability, justice and respect for human rights. However, on assuming power Duvalier changed his system of leadership and adopted oppressive ways of dictatorship. Jean-Claude took over power after the demise of his father. The regime of Jean-Claude was also compelled with economic and political malpractices due to the affiliation of dictatorship. The dictatorship style of leadership adopted by Francois Duvalier and Jean-Claude resulted in an adverse influence on the economic, policy and religious developments of the Haiti country. The misappropriation of funds by the government of Francois Duvalier was one of the major issues that affected the economy of Haiti. On attaining independence the country was committed to repaying debts it had obtained from the French government to conduct its activities. When Francois achieved power in 1957, he promised to bring to an end of the privileges entitled to the Mulatto elites. Initially, Duvalier was a medical doctor who was involved in fights against prevalent diseases before deciding to join politics. However, when a coup was plotted against his government a year later, he changed his leadership style to consolidate his position.
